When CivSec published the report Digital rådighet och strukturella beroenden in May 2026, it gave a clear definition to the concept: an organization's actual ability to control information, systems and decisions over time, even when suppliers, contracts or legal conditions change.

The report places digital control alongside NIS2, the AI Act, DORA and the Swedish Cybersecurity Act (2025:1506).1 It also points to the gap between what the regulatory frameworks already make possible and what organizations actually require when they procure, document and govern their digital environments.

Mandatory Package: Safespring Platform Basics

This mandatory training gives employees a shared baseline for explaining Safespring: what cloud services are, what Safespring provides, what we do not provide and how our platform differs from hyperscale cloud providers.

Gabriel Paus starts by framing the training goals: increase internal understanding of what Safespring does and does not do, make it easier to answer customer questions and give all employees a stronger technical foundation for collaboration.

The first part explains cloud computing through the NIST model: network access, measured service, resource pooling, on-demand self-service and rapid elasticity. It then separates the main service models: infrastructure as a service, platform as a service and software as a service. In Safespring terms, IaaS covers virtual machines and storage, while the managed Kubernetes offering sits closer to platform as a service. Safespring does not sell software as a service, but many customers build SaaS products on top of the platform.

Introduction to Safespring Kubernetes Engine

This demo walks through the full first-cluster flow in Safespring Kubernetes Engine: from signing in to the portal and creating a cluster to connecting with kubectl and removing the demo cluster when it is no longer needed.

The walkthrough starts in the Safespring self-service portal, where environments are used to group resources. From an empty environment, the demo creates a new Kubernetes cluster and shows the choices made during provisioning, including data center, control plane sizing and worker node sizing.

Safespring

The central theme for this year's KubeCon was unmistakable: cloud native infrastructure is AI infrastructure, and the ecosystem is reorganizing around that reality. Of course, Safespring was onsite and enjoying the latest from the industry.

/>

Keynote Highlights

The opening keynotes set the tone with a clear macro forecast: in 2023, roughly two-thirds of AI compute went to training and one-third to inference. By the end of 2026, that ratio is expected to flip, with inference compute demand projected to reach 93.3 gigawatts by decade’s end. The message was direct — Kubernetes is becoming the control plane for AI infrastructure, and the CNCF ecosystem is positioning itself to own that layer. And perhaps finally the operating system for the datacenter.

Safespring Kubernetes Engine

Safespring Kubernetes Engine gives development teams a ready platform for containerized workloads, operated from Sweden and Norway. You get a faster path to production without giving up control over jurisdiction, security, and platform boundaries.

The service is designed for organizations that need stronger control over data location, jurisdiction, and operational boundaries, including environments with GDPR, compliance, and digital sovereignty requirements.

The practical value is that engineering teams get a platform that is ready to use, while the organization keeps control over jurisdiction, security posture, and long-term platform direction without having to own every layer of platform operations internally.

Understanding Safespring Kubernetes Engine if you usually run Kubernetes yourself

If you already know how to run Kubernetes yourself, the useful question is not whether a managed service can create a cluster. The useful question is how the service is shaped, where the boundary sits, and which parts of the platform it already solves well.

We have written quite a bit lately about building Kubernetes platforms with Talos, OpenStack, Cluster API, Cinder CSI, and modern traffic management. That is one side of the picture.

Data Processing Agreement

This Data Processing Agreement (the “DPA”) between the Customer (below, the “Controller”) and Safespring AB (559075-0245) (below, the “Processor”) constitutes a part of the Agreement, under which the Processor will process personal data on behalf of the Controller when supplying the Service.
With the retirement of Ingress Nginx migration from Ingress-Nginx to Gateway API using Cilium with a shared gateway approach, trading some complexity for cleaner, more efficient, and standardized ingress management is one way of solving the question of ingress to your cluster.

Why explore Gateway API:

Annotation Sprawl: Managing dozens of ingress-nginx-specific annotations across ingress resources.

Limited Future-Proofing: Alignment with where the Kubernetes is heading.

Gateway API address these concerns by offering:

Standardization: Is an official Kubernetes project.

Enhanced Security: Built-in RBAC controls and namespace-based access restrictions.

Better Resource Management: The alternative of useingshared gateways means reduced resource overhead.

On 20 October 2025, the European Commission published a reference for grading European clouds: the Cloud Sovereignty Framework.

In this guide, we walk through configuring OpenID Connect (OIDC) authentication for the Kubernetes API Server in Talos-managed clusters.

The integration uses Zitadel as the identity provider, enabling secure, centralized authentication and authorization.

We will also leverage the kubectl OIDC plugin
kubelogin
for handling OIDC-based logins seamlessly from the command line.

In both Sweden and the EU, there is a recurring discussion about the use of American cloud services.

In these debates, it is not uncommon for one side to argue that there are legal obstacles, whereupon the other side claims that the right IT security resolves the legal obstacle. In the end, no one is any wiser about what the rules actually are.

After far too many such discussions and a continued state of confusion, I started wondering why the issue is so hard to discuss. One answer is of course that the party putting forward their argument has some sort of stake, for example that it benefits the person’s employer. But even if a party is not arguing intellectually honestly and instead argues from their special interest, the problem remains that very few seem able to make both a competent and complete assessment. Note that I am not claiming I can either.

Deploy Talos Kubernetes on OpenStack with Cluster API

In this article we want to take a few steps further our investigation into Talos Linux and how we can make use of it in Safespring Compute Infrastructure (OpenStack), and at the same time have a more in depth exploration of the automate installation and make use of Kubernetes Cluster API.

EuroStack’s Second Open Letter: Buy, Sell and Fund European!

On 6 May 2025, the EuroStack Industry Group, now over 200 strong, sent its second open letter to President von der Leyen, EVP Virkkunen and EVP Séjourné. Safespring is proud to stand with our peers in calling for the full deployment of the EuroStack by 2030.

Europe’s digital ecosystem is at a crossroads: continue as a “digital colony” dependent on US and Chinese providers, or build our own, sovereign infrastructure. The data are clear, over 80 % of large European enterprises’ cloud and software spending still flows to US giants, leaking jobs and value out of our economy. Even the major US vendors themselves now hedge against geopolitical risk with hollow promises to sue their own governments rather than secure our digital sovereignty.

Validate and upgrade Talos Linux Kubernetes on OpenStack

In a previous article we started to explore Talos Linux and what that could mean for us, and how we can automate the installation on Safespring OpenStack, but we wanted to go a few steps further in our investigation and look into confirming two more aspects:

When you want, need or are forced to leave an American cloud provider

In today’s geopolitical landscape where USA quickly tries to become more like China and Russia, customers to American cloud providers are faced with difficult decisions.

Do you want to leave? Maybe you feel that USA is too far gone destroying their democracy, or that things in general are going haywire.

Do you need to leave? Maybe your customer demands that your service is free from American connections or your employees refuse to work with American cloud providers or the Trans-Atlantic Data Privacy Framework disappears. If you are in the public sector or primarily sell to the public sector then you may need to reassess whether you can store and process personal data and/or secret information.

Why Safespring supports EuroStack

At Safespring we have, for almost 10 years, been developing and selling cloud services that respects that the customers’ data only belong to the customer and that European digital sovereignty is necessary for Europe to thrive.

In the current global political landscape it is obvious that Europe’s dependency on USA and China when it comes to IT products and services is disastrous for Europe’s future. Europe therefore needs to act swiftly to regain control over it’s own destiny.

Federated AI with FEDn on Safespring

With Broadcom's acquisition of VMware, many companies and organizations that have built their infrastructure on VMware have faced an unpleasant surprise: a new subscription-based model and overall higher prices.

Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware has sparked concerns over subscription-based pricing and higher costs.

While VMware excels at on-premises virtualization, Safespring offers a cloud-native alternative based on OpenStack (virtualization), Ceph (storage), and containers.

It’s not a direct drop-in replacement; instead, Safespring enables modernization of IT infrastructure with tools for network security, resilient services (via Elastic IPs and Server Groups), and flexible VPN options like WireGuard.

Built on open-source technologies, Safespring’s solutions avoid lock-in, empower administrators with hands-on control, and ensure predictable, transparent pricing over time.

For more than 20 years, VMware has been the most successful player in the market for virtualization solutions. VMware has offered flexibility (through virtualization) and other features and products to ease the workload of system administrators. Through good design choices, many customers have been able to migrate old physical systems directly into VMware. With robust monitoring, backend storage, and software-defined networking (SDN) solutions, VMware has enabled systems to be set up in a resilient and redundant way, requiring minimal changes to the actual software configuration of the systems. All Safespring’s services have APIs to enable the user to use the services in a more automated fashion.

Compute API

Safespring Compute is built upon OpenStack which comes with an extensible API. The services that Safespring provides API access for are:

Nova Compute. This API supports creation, deletion and modification of instances (virtual machines) in the platform.

Keystone Identity. The API handles all identity handling and RBAC in the platform. This is the API to which a user login in order to get an authentication token which then can be used to subsequent calls to other APIs in the platform.

Glance Image handling. This API handles images and snapshots, from which an instance can be created. The used can also use this API to upload custom images to the platform.

Neutron Network. This API handles networking. Since Safespring is using the networking engine Calico, this API is restricted since not all operations can be done when using this networking engine.

Cinder Block Storage. This API gives access to block storage operation such as creating and attaching volumes to instances.

Safespring Storage support the S3 API. The S3 API is the de-facto standard for interacting with object storage services. On this page, you'll find information about our Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud compute services, including detailed configurations and categories of compute services available.

Cloud compute services contains the following categories (OpenStack flavors):

Compute with local NVMe storage (‘L2’)

Compute (‘B2’)

Base disks are default root disk sizes unless a volume with a different size is specified when deploying an image. Ephemeral disks are extra local storage devices accessible to a virtual machine on a specific hypervisor, for flavour types where applicable.

Cloud Image Service

The Compute service additionally contains a cloud image service (OpenStack Glance).

Cloud Images

Cloud images are prepared OS images that are deployable in a cloud environment where, for example the server-to-be’s name, IP or MAC address is not known in advance. The images need to have the framework cloud-init installed, which provides OpenStack with an API to interact with the created instances to set these variables in the instance.

Courses

Mandatory and optional network services when using the IaaS platforms.

The network design of the Compute platform is based on L3 (IP) and hardware-based routing. Virtual routers or L2 overlay networks are not used. This ensures maximum network performance and operational simplicity at all scales. Security is based on sets of L3 IP address access control lists. If a customer requires overlay networks, they are free to deploy them – at less overhead and at higher performance than in competing provider solutions.

Platform as a service

Managed Compliant Kubernetes
